Children feel stress long before they have the words for it. Helping them notice physical signs — a tight chest, fidgeting — gives them a way in before the words come.
Help children rate their stress from 1 to 5. It teaches them that stress is not binary and helps them visualize that even a level 5 stress level is temporary and will fade.
Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. Practice this together during calm moments so they can access it as a quick reset when stressed.
Stress is normal. The goal is not to eliminate all stressors, but to equip children with the regulation tools to navigate it without feeling overwhelmed.
