Active Parent Strategies to Train Empathy as a Core Childhood Capability

Modeling matters more than instruction. Narrate your own empathetic choices out loud, and ask your child to guess how a character in a story might be feeling.
While reading books or watching movies, pause and ask: 'How do you think they felt when that happened?' or 'What would you do if you were in their shoes?'. This builds perspective-taking capacity.
Create a visual jar or journal. Write down one act of empathy or kindness witnessed or received each week. Read them together on Sunday evenings to reinforce empathy values.
Empathy is a cognitive and emotional skill that requires training. Active practice early in childhood is scientifically linked to higher long-term social success and collaboration.
